Benjamin Franklin is said to have proclaimed “a republic,” but only “if you can keep it.” following the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1887. The source of this quotation is a journal kept by James McHenry (1753-1816) while he was a Maryland delegate to the Constitutional Convention. On the page where McHenry records the events of the last day of the convention, September 18, 1787, he wrote: “A lady asked Dr. Franklin Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy – A republic replied the Doctor if you can keep it.” Then McHenry added: “The Lady here alluded to was Mrs. Powel of Philada.” The journal is at the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress.
Look at the original statement about democracy vs republic. That is what we all are discussing. The original Founding Fathers use of the term republic. A democracy was then what is now MOB RULE. Nothing has changed except the left over the last two hundred years has attacked the definition of republic to make it seem as though a "democracy" is now a republican form of government.
How is California's Representative Democracy working out for you today???!!!! That's the way the left works to redefine the basic principles of the Constitution. Read the federalist papers the Founders loathed a democracy. They NEVER wanted what we have today.
