Most Lassen County residents will remember the unsuccessful effort launched a few years ago in which some residents in Northern California and Southern Oregon sought to join together to form the state of Jefferson.
That effort, largely fueled by the perception that conservative rural voters in California are not adequately represented in the state legislature because of the large number of liberal voters in the state’s large urban areas.
Apparently, that festering boil of perception continues its infection, and some intend to apply the appropriate remedy at the Janesville Pizza Factory between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, when Lassen County residents have an opportunity to vote to approve the New California State Constitution — making the new state the 51st in the nation.
A California ID and proof of residency are required to vote. Organizers promise a one-day event with in-person voting on paper ballots that will be hand counted and the results reported the same day.
According to newcaliforniastate.com , “It can’t be done? Statehood has happened 50 times before. Our founding fathers included in our Constitution a way by which a state can be split when the government of that state becomes tyrannical. New California is following the West Virginia model of statehood exactly for that reason. Stand your ground … New California State is a new state in development forming from the State of California. New California State is exercising its God Given Rights as declared in the 1776 United States Declaration of Independence and as ratified in the 1789 United States Constitution under Article IV Section 3.”
On March 24, newcaliforniastate.com declared California has abdicated it constitutional authority. The next day President Trump issued an executive order Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections — cited as a historic event by the movement’s organizers.
According to newcaliforniastate.com, a “limited” principle state wide vote was held July 12, 2025 and then again on August 2, 2025 when “the New California State asked the citizens of California to approve New California State Constitution that was voted upon at the 13th Constitutional Convention in Visalia, California. The citizens overwhelmingly approved the New California Constitution be submitted to Congress.

Believe it or not, according to newcaliforniastate.com, a Constitutional Convention has already been held — “The 1st Constitutional Convention for New California State was held on July 21, 2018 at Harris Ranch, California. There were more than 155 delegates from 42 New California State counties who attended the first convention. The convention saw the formation of the New California Legislature with the establishment of an Assembly and a Senate. Next came the first legislative sessions for the two bodies.
The agenda for each body was to establish leadership and basic operational rules. Next came the passage of three resolutions by each body and a joint session of both the Assembly and Senate to affirm each resolution. The passage of the three joint resolutions gave to New California the first two elements of the Constitution: The Acceptance of the January 15, 2018 Declaration of Independence for New California State and the Preamble to the Constitution. New California State was born.”
